A cross-sectional study investigated 2270 children aged 2-17 years with physician-confirmed atopic dermatitis (AD) enrolled into a postmarketing cohort. The aim was to identify the frequency of allergic rhinitis and asthma in these patients. At least one additional form of atopy (asthma or allergic rhinitis) was reported in 71.3% of patients. Symptoms of asthma or allergic rhinitis were reported in 33.3%, whereas 38% reported symptoms of both conditions. By age 3 years at least one additional form of atopy (e.g., food or drug allergies) were reported in 66% of patients. Those with additional atopic illnesses had statistically significantly poorer disease control (p<0.001) (Kapoor, R. et al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2008, 58(1): 68-73).
