Fluconazole and flutrimazole creams show similar efficacy in the treatment of superficial mycosis

A 4-week, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, noninferiority study of 0.5% (n = 53), 1% fluconazole (n = 57) or 1% flutrimazole cream (n = 52) evaluated their efficacy and safety in patients with superficial mycosis. The primary endpoint was determined by complete mycological cure at 4 weeks. This was obtained in 58.5, 64.9 and 57.7% in the fluconazole 0.5%, fluconazole 1% and flutrimazole 1% groups, respectively, and was a nonsignificant difference. No differences were seen in the adverse event frequency among the three groups (P = 0.12). The three agents therefore appeared to be equally efficacious and well tolerated in this patient population (Yim, S.M. et al. Mycoses 2010, 53: 522).
