A multicenter, randomized study assessed the safety and efficacy of long-term intermittent treatment with fluticasone propionate 0.005% ointment in children with atopic dermatitis (AD). This study consisted of two different phases: an open acute treatment phase in which children received fluticasone propionate applied twice daily on the affected sites for 4 weeks, and a maintenance treatment which consisted of adding placebo or twice-weekly fluticasone propionate ointment (on 2 consecutive evenings) to twice-daily emollient for a total of 16 weeks.
