The role of 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels in vitiligo vulgaris

 
 

A prospective cohort study in 45 consecutive patients with vitiligo vulgaris (VV) determined whether low vitamin D levels were associated with autoimmunity. Levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D were ranked into 3 groups: normal (> 30 ng/mL); insufficient (< 30 ng/mL) or very low (< 15 ng/mL). In VV patients, 31.1, 58.6 and 13.3% were normal, insufficient or very low, respectively. Those with insufficient levels were more likely to have increasing Fitzpatrick phenotypes (odd ratio [OR]: 1.76) and those with very low levels were more likely to have comorbid autoimmune illness (OR: 10.00).
