A prospective, controlled trial of isotretinoin on quality of life and depressive symptoms

 
 

A prospective, controlled trial measured depressive symptoms and quality of life in a group of 102 acne patients (mean age 20 years) taking isotretinoin compared with a group taking standard antibiotic treatment. Outcome measures included acne severity, quality of life assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life abbreviated questionnaire (WHOQoL-BREF) and depression assessed using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Mood Score (CES-D). There were no significant changes between groups in the physical, social or environmental QoL or depression over a 6-month period. However, psychological QoL improved significantly in both groups in line with previous literature on this topic (McGrath, E. et al. Br J Dermatol 2009, 161(Suppl.1): 2-3 Abst O-5).
