Donald Y.M. LeungAffiliation: Division of Pediatric Allergy/Immunology, National Jewish Medical and Research Center
Donald Y. M. Leung is Head of Pediatric Allergy-Immunology at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver, Colorado. He attended the University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D in 1975 and a M.D. in 1977. His postdoctoral training included a pediatric internship and residency at The Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston. He was a Fellow in Allergy-Immunology at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston between 1979-1981. Dr. Leung subsequently joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School with appointments as Instructor (1981), Assistant Professor (1983) and Associate Professor (1987) in the Department of Pediatrics. Since 1989, Dr. Leung has been Head of Pediatric Allergy-Immunology at National Jewish. He has also been Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) since 1991, and Associate Program Director of the UCHSC General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) overseeing the National Jewish GCRC satellite since 1994. Dr. Leung is a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics, American Board of Allergy-Immunology, and Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology. He is the author of more than 450 published scientific articles, book chapters and abstracts. He is current Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, a Consulting Editor for The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and past Chairman of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology's Dermatologic Diseases Interest Section and their Atopic Dermatitis committee. He has been a member of the NIH General Medicine A Study Section and is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is currently on the Board of Directors for The American Board of Allergy and Immunology and is Co-chair of the ABAI 2001 Certifying Examination. His major research interests are Immune Mechanisms of Atopic Dermatitis, Regulation of the Allergic Immune Response, Superantigens and Human Disease, and Mechanisms of Steroid Resistant Asthma. He delivered the Jerome Glaser Memorial Lectureship, the C. Warren Bierman Memorial Lectureship and the Sheldon C. Siegel Memorial Lectureship at the 1993, 1995 and 1997 AAAAI meetings, respectively. In 1995, he was the recipient of a NIH NHLBI MERIT Award for his work in Kawasaki Syndrome, and in 1997 he won the E. Mead Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Pediatrics. Clinical Interests:Evaluation and treatment of patients with atopic dermatitis, asthma, immunodeficiency, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, urticaria, drug allergy and food allergy. Research Interests:Dr. Leung has both clinical research and laboratory research interests. His clinical research includes the development of new approaches for the evaluation and treatment of atopic dermatitis, Kawasaki Disease, food allergy and severe asthma. His laboratory research involves understanding the immunologic and molecular basis of allergic responses, atopic dermatitis, Kawasaki Disease, food allergy, severe asthma, corticosteroid insensitivity, and superantigen-induced diseases.
