Azathioprine is a well-established thiopurine immunosuppressant prescribed since the 1960s. New guidelines on its use in inflammatory dermatoses have been compiled by the British Association of Dermatology. These were based on the literature published since 1966, and focused especially on the last 5 years. Highlighted recommendations for the practical use of the drug in the clinic, its health economic impact, future directions and updated patient information were discussed (Meggitt, S.J. et al. Br J Dermatol 2011, 165: 711).
