Study identifies most frequent allergens of 26 fragrance ingredients in the EU Cosmetics Directive

 
 

A Danish retrospective study (2008-2010) assessed the frequencies of sensitization to 26 individual fragrance ingredients that must be declared on ingredient lists of cosmetic products sold in the European Union. Patients with eczema (n = 1508) were patch-tested with 26 fragrance ingredients. Patch-testing was positive in 7.6% of patients to all 26 fragrance ingredients. The most frequent allergens were Evernia furfuracea, Evernia prunastri and hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde in 50, 31 and 24 subjects, respectively. If one includes fragrance mix 1 and 2 and Myroxylon pereira, 13% had an allergic reaction. Most reactions were clinically relevant (Heisterberg, M.V. et al. Contact Dermatitis 2011, 65: 266).
