Autoimmune markers and vitiligo appear to be correlated with obsession and phobia

 
 

An age- and gender-matched case-control study investigated 112 nonsegmented patients with vitiligo with/without autoimmune markers regarding psychiatric, psychosomatic and social aspects. The Middlesex Healthcare Questionnaire (MHQ) and Florentine questionnaire were used to investigate psychiatric, psychosomatic and social aspects, respectively. Age, phobia and obsession were predictive of the presence of autoimmune markers and a low total MHQ score was predictive of absence of autoimmune markers. Thus the presence of autoimmune markers in patients with vitiligo may suggest a psychiatric screen would be prudent based on this study (Moretti, S. et al. JEADV 2011, Advance publication).
