The expression levels of nestin, BRN2, SOX9 and SOX10 were analyzed in melanoma tissues (n = 79) and melanocytic nevi (n = 26). All proteins were highly expressed in primary and metastatic melanomas (56-57%) and apart from BRN2 (73%), showed much lower levels in melanocytic nevi. Significant coexpression of nestin with SOX9 and SOX10 was found in primary melanomas and nestin was significantly associated with ulceration in primary tumors (P = 0.008) and SOX9 with more advanced clinical disease stage (P = 0.048). These data suggest that nestin and SOX9 are negative prognostic biomarkers in melanoma (Bakos, R.N. et al. Exptl Dermatol 2010, 19: e89).
