The level of bother and discomfort felt by women with hirsutism was assessed by expanding the Bother Assessment in Skin Conditions (BASC) scale to cover the discomfort felt in social situations and bother due to facial depilation. Females participating in two randomized clinical trials of eflornithine 13.9% cream were assessed. Hirsutism bothered the majority (89%) of patients and the mean discomfort in social situations exceeded 80% in almost all cases. However, treatment led to significant reductions in bother with effect sizes of 0.46-1.62. Eflornithine cream was an effective treatment in this condition (Jackson, J. et al. Int J Dermatol 2007, 46(9): 976-981).
