Naltrexone for the management of post-burn pruritus

A case series of 15 patients with post-burn pruritus treated with naltrexone was presented; naltrexone had proved effective in treating other forms of pruritus. Two patients discontinued treatment due to adverse events. Of the 13 patients who completed, 72% reported satisfactory relief of itch. A majority of patients were able to decrease or stop other medications (69%), recommended naltrexone to other patients (85%) and said it improved their quality of life (62%). Further controlled studies are required (LaSalle, L. et al. Burns 2008, 34[6]: 797-802).
