Filaggrin mutations are not associated with atopic dermatitis in Chinese children


Filaggrin (FLG) null mutations are a major risk factor for atopic dermatitis (AD) susceptibility and severity in Caucasian populations but this does not appear to be the case in Chinese individuals, according to a recent study carried out at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Five FLG null mutations (R501X, 2282del4, R2447X, S2554X and S2889X) were genotyped in 184 Chinese children with AD and 191 nonallergic control subjects. Only 2.2% of AD patients were heterozygous carriers of the R501X mutation, whereas all other mutations were absent in the study population.
