Evaluating out-in skin transparency in atopic dermatitis

 
 

A new method for evaluating outside to inside (out-in) skin transparency was assessed using food dyes, namely tartrazine, and a colorimeter. Two studies were conducted. One in 24 normal and 4 atopic dermatitis (AD) patients assessed the relationship between skin color and atopic dermatitis score. This was positive and significant (r = 0.529; p = 0.001). Other parameters such as transepidermal water loss (TEWL), moisture content on the skin surface and stratum corneum were not correlated.
