Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis

 
 

Guidelines for the treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) have been recently published by the Group of Cutaneous Immunopathology of the Italian Society of Dermatology and Venereology. Data were compiled from the literature and clinical experience of the authors. The key treatment options were a gluten-free diet, dapsone (1 mg/kg/day), sulfadiazine (1-2 g/day) or sulfamethoxypyridazine (0.25-1.5 g/day). Corticosteroids and third generation antihistamines may be tried; they have low efficacy but may be useful for pruritus (Caproni, M. et al. JEADV 2009, 23: 633).
