Beneficial effects of synbiotics on intestinal microbiota of infants with atopic dermatitis

A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effects of Immunofortis® (a hydrolyzed formula with Bifidobacterium breve M16-V and a short-chain galacto/long-chain fructo-oligosaccharide mixture) in 90 infants with atopic dermatitis (AD), aged less than 7 months. The controls received the same formula without the synbiotics. Fecal composition and metabolic activity of the intestinal microbiota were examined at weeks 1 and 12 and parents reported gastric symptoms and information in a diary. At weeks 1 and 12, the synbiotic group had a higher detection rate of B. breve (40% and 26.5%) versus the placebo group (11.1 and 3.2%; P = 0.02 [week 1] and P = 0.01 [week 12], respectively).
