Association between psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease identified

 
 

An Israeli case control study in 12,502 psoriasis patients (median age 56 years) investigated the association between psoriasis and ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Age- and gender-matched controls (median age 55 years; n=24,287) were included in the analysis. The odds ratio (OR) for developing ulcerative colitis was 2.49 and for Crohn's disease was 1.64 in patients with psoriasis. This association was independent of anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha therapy. Further research on psoriasis comorbidities is warranted (Cohen, A.D. et al. J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2009, 23[5]; 561).
