The European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (ETFAD) and European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) recently published a 2009 guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical treatments reviewed included corticosteroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, antibacterials and antimycotics. Systemic treatments comprised antihistamines, corticosteroids, ciclosporin, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, methotrexate and the biologics alefacept, infliximab, rituximab, efalizumab and mepolizumab. Probiotic treatments are discussed although the evidence was not robust. Phototherapy (broadband UVA and UVB, narrowband UVB and UVAI) was discussed as was the role of educational programs and counseling (Darsow, U. et al. JEADV 2010, 24(3): 317).
