Antidesmoglein antibodies: Correlation with disease activity in pemphigus patients

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) are blistering skin disorders characterized by the presence of autoantibodies to desmoglein (Dsg) 3 in PV and Dsg 1 in PF. Autoantibodies against Dsg 3 and/or Dsg 1 were seen in 100% of PV sera (n = 71) and 96% of PF sera (n = 50). Control sera in 401 healthy patients showed 0.2% and 0.7% with autoantibodies to Dsg 3 and Dsg 1, respectively. In 48 bullous pemphigoid patients, 2.1% of patients each had autoantibodies to Dsg 3 and Dsg 2. These findings are of interest for the diagnosis and monitoring of PV and PF (Schmidt, E. et al.
