Guidelines for the management of pediatric tinea capitis


Practice guidelines for the management of tinea capitis (TC) have been published from the European Society for Pediatric Dermatology. Systemic treatment is always recommended for TC and the gold standard, griseofulvin, has not been superseded to date. Newer agents such as terbinafine, itraconazole and fluconazole have similar efficacy and tolerability profiles to griseofulvin but may be more expensive. However, griseofulvin is not available in some  countries such as Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Turkey. Griseofulvin is still the drug of choice in Microsporum species and its efficacy is greater than terbinafine on this organism.
