Topical tacrolimus for the treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum

Five case reports of patients aged 13-78 years with localized, idiopathic, newly diagnosed pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) treated with topical tacrolimus monotherapy were published. In all five patients, complete remission occurred within an average of 6 weeks (range 4-8 weeks) with no relapses. In 3 cases, tacrolimus was discontinued while 2 were still using it as maintenance therapy at the time of writing. One patient experienced a slight burning sensation and no patient had systemic absorption. Tacrolimus would appear to be a promising treatment for this PG variant (Marzano, A.V. et al. J Dermatol Treatment 2010, 21(3): 140).
