Clinical relevance of Malassezia IgE antibodies in pediatric atopic dermatitis

 
 

The relationship between the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to Malassezia spp., age, SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index, total IgE levels, polysensitization diversity and dermal colonization was determined in 112 children with atopic dermatitis (AD), aged 1-15 years. Forty-two per cent of children (aged > 5 years) had IgE Malassezia spp. antibodies as did every second patient aged 6-15 years. IgE antibodies were found in 42.5% of all AD patients and the levels increased with increasing SCORAD scores. IgE-antibody correlated with total IgE levels and polysensitization.
