Time course of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in burn patients: Prognostic value of interleukin-10

 
 

A Hungarian, prospective, descriptive study determined the time course of and prognostic value of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines over the first 6 days of admission in 39 burn patients with > 20% burns. The patients were categorized into 21 survivors and 18 nonsurvivors. Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta), IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) levels were measured on the day of admission and for 5 consecutive days. IL-12p70 levels remained under detection levels through the whole study period. IL-1beta and TNF-alpha levels were increased in survivors versus nonsurvivors in stimulated blood samples.
