Abnormal responses to herpes simplex in patients with eczema herpeticum

Ex vivo immune responses of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients with (ADEH+; n=13) or without (ADEH-; n=15) eczema herpeticum (EH) and normal controls (n=18) were investigated to gain a closer understanding of their susceptibility to herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. Post HSV stimulation-induced interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production was lower across the AD groups versus the normal controls (p<0.01). IFN-gamma was decreased in CD4 and CD8 subsets of AD patients versus normal controls, but no differences were seen between ADEH+/ADEH- cohorts. CD14 cells from ADEH+ increased interleukin 10 (IL-10) expression (p = 0.005) and proportionally less IFN-gamma: IL-10 expression compared with the ADEH- subset (p=0.094). No differences in IL-13 and IL-17 expression in T-cell subsets ...
