A review of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), its epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical aspects and treatment has been published. MCC is estimated to have an incidence of 0.18-0.41/100,000 persons and the age-adapted incidence has tripled from 1986-2001, with a statistically significant annual incidence of 8%. MCC usually develops rapidly in sun-damaged skin giving a red or violaceous firm nodule with a smooth, shiny surface. Recent research has implicated a polyomavirus (Merkel cell polyomavirus or MCV) in the pathogenesis of MCC. Treatment involves surgical excision, lymphadenectomy, radiotherapy or chemotherapy or combinations thereof.
