Low prevalence of pediatric psoriasis in a Southern Californian cohort

A retrospective chart review study (2007-2008) estimated the prevalence of pediatric psoriasis in Southern California and investigated the validity of diagnosis by a dermatologist and non-dermatologist. The cohort comprised 710,949 children enrolled in a prepaid health plan. Positive predictive values (PPVs) for diagnosis were reported by dermatologists and non-dermatologists. The prevalence of pediatric psoriasis confirmed by chart review was 19/10,000 patients, compared with a confirmed/unconfirmed prevalence of 30/10,000 patients. PPVs for valid diagnoses were 90% by dermatologists and 26.6% by non-dermatologists. Psoriasis prevalence was 29, 20, 16 and 6% in non-Hispanic whites, Asia/Pacific islanders, Hispanic whites and blacks per 10,000 patients, respectively (Wu, J.J. et al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2011,65: 957).
