Management guideline published for atopic dermatitis in children

A Korean review surveyed the epidemiology of pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) and proposed a new approach for its management. The treatment approach was divided into conservative management, topical and systemic anti-inflammatory therapy. Skin care, diet, management of ventilation, humidity and cleaning and psychological aspects (counseling) comprised the main elements of conservative care. Topical therapies included corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors. Antipruritic antihistamines and/or systemic antibiotics could also be added if necessary. Wet dressings and wet wraps were other options. Systemic therapy included oral or intravenous corticosteroids, cyclosporin A, interferon-gamma and ultraviolet treatments. Omalizumab, intravenous immunoglobulin and herbal medicines may also be considered (Lee, S-I. et al. Asia Pac Allergy 2011, 1: 53).
