Smad3 signal transducers regulate inflammatory and antibody responses in murine dermatitis

 
 

A murine study examined the role of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) Smad signalling pathway using Smad3 deficient mice. The murine model of atopic dermatitis (AD) used epicutaneous application of ovalbumin (OVA) to tape stripped skin. OVA-specific IgE and IgG2a and levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1beta) and dermal thickness were also assessed. Dermal thickness was significantly decreased in OVA-sensitized skin of Smad3 deficient mice; this was accompanied by a decrease in the expression of IL-6 and IL-1beta. However, mast cell numbers and OVA-specific IgE were significantly increased.
