Influence of bathing or washing on skin barrier function during the first month of life

 
 

A prospective, single-center, randomized study compared the effects of two standard cleansing procedures in 57 healthy full-term neonates. Randomization was to either a bathing group (group B; n = 29), bathed with clear water twice weekly or to a washing group (group W; n = 28) washed with a washcloth moistened with clear water twice weekly for 7 days. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), skin pH and sebum production were measured on the forehead, abdomen, upper leg and buttock.
