Allergic sensitization in pediatric atopic eczema from different countries

 
 

A study conducted in 94 centers in 12 countries investigated the pattern of allergic sensitization in a cohort of 2,184 infants (aged 12-24 months) with atopic eczema. Clinical history, SCORing Atopic Dermatitis Index (SCORAD), total IgE and specific IgE to food and aeroallergens were assessed. Over half (52.9%) of the subjects had raised total IgE and 55% were sensitized to at least one allergen. The highest prevalence rates were seen in Australia (83%), UK (79%) and Italy (76%). Belgian and Polish infants had the lowest rates. Ranking of prevalent aeroallergens was consistent in all countries: house dust mite was the most prevalent, followed by cat, grass pollen and then Alternaria. ...
