The associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the CT haplotype in defensin A (DEFA) and B (DEFB) genes in Korean atopic dermatitis (AD) patients were investigated. Genotyping of 27 SNPs from DEFA 4, 5 and 6 genes and the DEFB1 gene for 631 AD patients and 485 healthy controls was conducted. The rs5743399 SNP, rs5743409 SNP and CT haplotype in the DEFB1 gene were significantly associated with AD susceptibility. The DEFB1 gene would seem strongly associated with dermal inflammation and/or skin responsiveness to allergic insults (Kim, E. et al. J Dermatol 2009, 54[1]: 25).
