Severity of disease rather than xerosis correlates with pruritus in atopic dermatitis

The contribution of atopic xerosis to the development of pruritus was examined in 22 atopic dermatitis (AD) patients (mean age 27.5 years). Xerosis and AD severity were assessed with Objective Severity Assessment of Atopic Dermatitis (OSAAD) and SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) indices. A modified SCORAD index was evaluated by removing pruritus symptoms. A visual analogue scale (VAS) and Verbal Itch Score (VIS) were used to assess pruritus. Atopic xerosis measured by OSAAD correlated with VAS scores (r = 0.54; p = 0.009) but not VIS (r = 0.252; p = 0.257). There were positive and significant correlations between the standard and modified SCORAD; with both VAS and VIS; between OSAAD, VAI ...
