Serum trace element homeostasis in psoriasis: Diagnostic and therapeutic potential

 
 

The role of trace elements was investigated in 52 psoriasis patients, of whom 22 had mild and 30 had severe disease. Homeostasis, redox ratio and oxidative stress parameters were measured. There was no change in sodium and potassium levels between controls and psoriasis patients. Calcium, magnesium, cobalt, iron and silicon levels were elevated in mild and severe psoriasis (P < 0.001 vs. controls). Zinc levels were only elevated in severe cases. Copper, iron, zinc, selenium and silicon levels play a role in the pathogenesis and therapeutic intervention of psoriasis (Basavaraj, K.H. et al. 10th Int Congr Dermatol (May 20-24, Prague) 2009, 458).
