The risk of immediate or delayed allergic reactions to oat-containing cosmetics and oat extracts in 12 cereal-sensitized atopic adults was determined. A 45-day open-label trial design was used and sensitivity was assessed by patch and skin prick tests. Rhealba® oat-based cosmetics did not induce any immediate or delayed allergic reactions and were well tolerated in this small study. Thus sensitivity to cereals need not preclude the topical use of oat-based cosmetics (Goujon, C. et al. Dermatology 2009, 218(4): 327).
