Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis

The frequency and characteristics of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were assessed in 130 patients with chronic plaque psoriasis (CPP) and 260 healthy controls matched for age, gender and body mass index (BMI). NAFLD was more prevalent in CPP than controls (48% vs. 28%; P < 0.0001). Patients with psoriasis and NAFLD were more likely to have higher C-reactive protein and interleukin 6 levels and lower serum adiponectin than controls (versus those with psoriasis alone;  P = 0.0003). They also had higher Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores (14.2 vs. 9.6; P < 0.01).
