A U.S. cohort study was conducted to determine whether patients with severe psoriasis (n = 3,603) have an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) mortality. Patients were excluded if they had a history of coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, stroke/transient ischemic attacks, cerebrovascular disease or peripheral vascular disease. Up to four controls without psoriasis per patient were selected from the same practices (n = 14,330). In the cohort studied there were 971 deaths; of these 301 were deemed to be of CV origin. Severe psoriasis was an independent risk factor for CV mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.66) when adjusted for age, gender, smoking, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
