Treatment of psoriasis in patients with hepatitis C: A literature review

A literature review aimed to develop a consensus view of treating psoriasis patients who had concomitant hepatitis C (HCV) infection. For limited psoriasis, the suggested first- and second-line therapies were topical treatment and narrowband UVB (NB-UVB), respectively. For moderate-severe psoriasis the suggested first-line therapies were broadband UVB, NB-UVB and topical therapies. Second-line therapies comprised acitretin, etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab and psoralen ultraviolet A (PUVA) treatment. Third-line treatments comprised alefacept, ciclosporin, efalizumab and azathioprine. Methotrexate and mycophenolate mofetil were contraindicated. No large double-blind trials exist in this area and further work is required (Frankel, A.J. et al. J Am Acad Dermatol 2009, 61(6): 1044).
