Incidence and clinical predictors of subsequent nonmelanoma skin cancer in transplant recipients with a first nonmelanoma skin cancer

 
 

An Italian, two-center, partially retrospective cohort study (1993-2008) compared the long-term risk of a primary nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and the risk of subsequent NMSCs in 1,934 kidney or heart transplant patients. Two hundred patients had a first NMSC after a median follow-up of 6.8 years post-transplant; the 3-year risk of NMSC was 2.1%. Of the 200 patients, nearly half (45.5%) had a second NMSC after a median follow-up of 1.4 years from the first NMSC.
