C-reactive protein and leukocyte activation as potential monitors of psoriasis vulgaris severity and therapy

 
 

A cross-sectional (n = 73) and longitudinal study (n = 47) was performed in psoriasis vulgaris (PV) patients to study C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocyte activation markers/inhibitors as potential monitors of the disease. A control group of 38 healthy controls was also included. Ten patients had started topical therapy, 17 narrowband UVB and 20 psoralen with UVA phototherapy. Psoriasis patients had higher CRP levels (P < 0.001), total leukocyte and neutrophil counts (P = 0.043 and P = 0.016, respectively), elastase (P < 0.001), lactoferrin (P < 0.001) and alpha1-antitrypsin levels (P = 0.001) than controls.
