A French retrospective survey (1993-2007) investigated the maternal and fetal management and outcomes of 22 pregnant women with advanced metastatic melanoma. Three women underwent an abortion, three abstained from therapy during pregnancy, four underwent chemotherapy and one patient received brain radiotherapy alone. Median gestational age was 36 weeks amenorrhea. Neonatal metastases or deformities were not observed, but placental metastasis was found in one case. Of 18 newborns, 17 are currently alive after a median follow-up of 17 months. There was one sudden infant death. Stage III and IV 2-year maternal survival rates were 56 and 17, respectively (Pages, C. et al Br J Dermatol 2010, 162(2): 274).
