A German study evaluated platelet P-selectin as a biomarker for cutaneous inflammation in 147 subjects with an inflammatory or infectious skin condition. These comprised moderate-severe plaque psoriasis (n = 47); localized dermatitis (n = 28); widespread dermatitis (n = 25); urticaria (n = 13); bacterial infection (n = 13); leg ulcers (n = 10) and prurigo (n = 11). Forty-one patients without skin symptoms served as controls. A significant increase in platelet P-selectin was seen in patients with inflammatory or infectious skin conditions (3.01 vs. 1.46%; P < 0.000001).
