Goeckerman therapy effective for pediatric psoriasis: A 21-year retrospective review

 
 

The Goeckerman treatment for psoriasis comprises daily application of crude coal tar ointment followed by daily ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation for approximately 3 weeks. A retrospective review of the records of 65 pediatric patients (aged 3 months-18 years) treated from 1981-2003 at the Mayo Clinic in the USA was conducted. Psoriasis improved in all patients and 85% had > 80% clearance of their psoriasis. Folliculitis was the only adverse event and occurred in 42% of patients. The mean duration of remission and follow-up was 2.6 years for each parameter. Thus the Goeckerman treatment is an effective therapy for widespread psoriasis in children (Kortuem, K.R. et al. Pediatric Dermatol 2010, 27(5): 518).
