Correlation between dermal stinging responses to lactic acid and biophysical parameters

A Korean study measured dermal biophysical parameters noninvasively in 298 women who were "stingers" or "non-stingers" in response to 5% lactic acid solution. The parameters measured were transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, sebum content and pH. A positive correlation was found between stinging responses and TEWL but not with the other parameters. There appears to be a correspondence between the degree of stinging and skin barrier function, but further studies are needed (An, S. et al. Contact Dermatitis 2007, 57(3): 158-162).
