Cycloxygenase-2 gene variants in nonmelanoma skin cancers post-transplantation

Whether common known polymorphisms in the regulatory region of the cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene (PTSG2) can be linked with nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) post organ transplantation was investigated. The frequency of 3 polymorphisms (-765G → C; -1195A → G; 8473T → C) was determined in 240 transplant recipients (107 cases and 103 controls). Allele -765C represented a protective factor in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) cases under 50 years (p=0.03). The haplotype containing all major alleles represents a protective factor in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) undergoing transplantation after age 50 (p=0.009) and variant 1195A → G may represent a risk factor in this subgroup (p=0.01). Variant 8473T → C showed no ...
