EADV 2010 Congress: Psoriasis patients have higher Framingham risk scores

Psoriasis is a chronic dermatological condition that is associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. Absolute risk for major CV events may be predicted using the Framingham risk score, which takes into account demographics, total and HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, smoking status and diabetes. Framingham risk scores of psoriasis patients were estimated in a cross-sectional study. A total of 234 adults with psoriasis were included and compared to 234 age- and sex-matched controls with non-psoriasis skin problems. Five- and 10-year Framingham risk scores were higher in psoriasis versus the non-psoriasis matched group (5.3 vs. 3.4 and 11.2 vs. 7.3, respectively) and also higher in patients aged > 50 years.
