Effective narrowband UVB therapy suppresses the IL-23/IL-17 axis in normalized psoriatic plaques

The effects of 6 weeks of narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) radiation therapy on 14 patients with moderate-severe psoriasis was examined on normalized (n = 8) or nonresponsive (n = 6) plaques based on histological and clinical scoring. NB-UVB decreased several parameters of the interleukin (IL)-23/IL-17 axis in normalized but not in nonresponsive plaques. Moreover, the number of CD11c+, dendritic cells (DCs) including CD1c−, CD11c+, inflammatory DCs and their products IL-20, nitric oxide synthetase, IL-12/23p40 and IL-23p19 were also decreased. NB-UVB also decreased IL-17 and IL-27 mRNA and this correlated with lesion reduction. NB-UVB decreased interferon-gamma levels and targets the IL-17 pathway, which may increase psoriatic resolution (Johnson-Hiang, L.M. et al. J Invest Dermatol ...
