Filaggrin null mutations and their association with contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis

 
 

A Danish study examined the association between filaggrin (FLG) mutations and contact allergy, polysensitization, hand eczema at first appearance, occurrence and course of dermatitis. A total of 430 subjects (all with 1 or more positive patch tests) were genotyped for FLG mutations R501X and 2282del4. It was found that 3.5% and 5.1% of the subjects were 2282del4 and R501X heterozygotes, respectively. Odds ratios (ORs) of 1.49, 0.84, 0.78, 0.96, 1.25 and 0.76 were found for nickel allergy, polysensitization, dermatitis, hand eczema at debut, duration of disease and age at onset, respectively.
