High coincidence of depressive episodes with exacerbations of atopic dermatitis

 
 

The prevalence and type of depression in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) were evaluated in a sample of 97 AD patients, of whom 37, 30, 19 and 11 had mild, moderate, severe and very severe AD, respectively, based on their Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) scores. In nearly four-fifths of patients (79.3%), depressive episodes coexisted with AD exacerbations. In 20.7%, depressive disorders developed independently. In 24% of patients with coexistence of AD and depression, a seasonal pattern of both conditions was seen. In cases where AD and depression developed independently, seasonal, postpartum, psychogenic and pubertal depression variants were seen (Michenko, A.V. et al. 10th Int Congr Dermatol (May 20-24, Prague) 2009, 458).
