Homeopathic versus conventional therapy for pediatric atopic eczema: Medical and economic aspects

A German, nonrandomized, multicenter, comparative, observational study compared homeopathic with conventional medicine in 135 children (aged 1-4 years) with mild-moderate atopic eczema. The primary outcome was the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index at 6 months. Other outcomes at 6 and 12 months included quality of life of parents and children, use of conventional medicine, safety and treatment-related costs. The adjusted SCORAD showed no significant differences between homeopathic and conventional medicine at 6 or 12 months. The adjusted costs were higher in the homeopathic group at 935 euros and 1,524 euros at 6 and 12 months, respectively.
