Increased risk of psychiatric disorders in pediatric psoriasis patients

 
 

A U.S. retrospective case study (2000-2006) analysis evaluated the incidence of psychiatric disorders in patients aged 2-14 years with or without psoriasis. The study assessed 2,144 patients and 10,720 age- and gender-matched controls. A significantly greater proportion of patients with psoriasis had psychiatric disorders compared with controls (5.13 vs. 4.07%; P < 0.001). The risk of depression and anxiety was also greater in psoriasis patients (3.01 vs. 2.42%; P = 0.0036) and 1.81 versus 1.35% (P = 0.0048), respectively. The hazard ratios (HRs) for psychiatric disorder, depression and anxiety were 1.25, 1.23 and 1.32, respectively.
